Why Preparation Matters
Many test results can change with food, medicines, exercise or even the time of day. Proper preparation ensures that your doctor sees the “real picture” of your health. At EUREKA DIAGNOSTICS, we want every result to be as accurate as possible.
Fasting vs Non-Fasting Tests
Some tests must be done on an empty stomach (fasting), while others do not.
- Fasting required: Fasting blood sugar, lipid profile, some hormone and vitamin tests.
- Fasting not required: Most CBC, kidney, liver, thyroid and urine tests.
Unless your doctor advises otherwise, fasting usually means 8–12 hours without food. You may drink small amounts of plain water, but avoid tea, coffee, juice or chewing gum.
Medicines and Supplements
Never stop prescribed medicines on your own. Inform your doctor and the lab about all medicines and supplements you are taking. Some may interfere with sugar, cholesterol, hormone or clotting tests. Your doctor will guide you if any medicine needs temporary adjustment before testing.
Before a Urine or Stool Test
- Use a clean, dry container provided by the lab.
- For urine, collect the mid-stream sample, not the very first or last drops.
- Do not mix water or tissue with the sample.
- Bring the sample to the lab as soon as possible, ideally within 1–2 hours.
On the Day of the Test
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing so that blood collection is easier.
- Carry your previous reports and prescription.
- Tell the phlebotomist if you have ever fainted during blood tests.
- After the test, press firmly on the puncture site for a few minutes to avoid bruising.
After the Test
Once testing is done, you can usually eat and drink normally (unless your doctor has advised further fasting). If you feel dizzy, sit for a while and inform our staff. We are always there to help.
Good preparation is a small effort from your side that leads to big benefits in the accuracy of your reports. If you are unsure about how to prepare for a specific test at EUREKA DIAGNOSTICS, please call us before your visit.
